Theory X & Theory Y Managers

Theory X & Theory Y

Theory
Employee Type
Manager Type
X
Employees are lazy
Manager thinks the employees are lazy
Employees are good
Manager thinks the employees are lazy
Y
Employees are lazy
Manager thinks the employees are good
Employees are good
Manager thinks the employees are good

Theory X

Condition 1:- Employees are lazy and Manager assumes that employees are lazy. In this condition Manager doesn’t motivate the employees and he doesnot try to find ways to improve employees' productivity. This condition is degenerative for Organization. We can see this scenario in lots of govt. organizations and this has been a major reason for low productivity among them.

Condition 2:- Employees are good but manager thinks employees are lazy. This condition is also not good. Employees are trying to do their best but they are getting no incentive for that. Manager is not providing proper appreciation and motivation to the employees. This results in deteriorating performance of employees, inclining the organization to move towards Condition 1.

Theory Y

Condition 3:- The employees are lazy but manager thinks  they are good employees. He provides proper motivation and feed back to employees, which results in better performance by employee, inclining the organization to move towards goal.

Condition 4:- This is condition for very effective and efficient organization. Employee is good and he is getting proper motivation to strive for better.

These conditions show that the managers of theory X are having a negative attitude towards the goal where as the managers of theory Y are positive in their approach and tend to think positive and this motivates the entire team and provides the positive energy.

I want to quote an example from my personal experience which is of Condition 2 where employees were good but manager thought that Employees were lazy.
I was working at a Project Site where all the employees were very hard working and just needed some motivation,  but my project manager believed that nobody from the employees was interested in doing his work until and unless he forces them. So he was used to consistently find faults in their work and even when the employees have achieved something he never motivated them instead of that he use to tell them that whatever they have achieved should have been done earlier. This resulted in lack of motivation and lack of interest in the work  among the employees and this resulted in delay in the project.

So this is an example of Theory X manager due to which the project got delayed.

Excellence

Concept of Excellenc , Efficiency & Effectiveness:

Excellence = Effectiveness x efficiency

Efficiency is the ability to do things right and effectiveness is doing thing right or we can say choosing the right goals or targets.

To achieve excellence I should be effective as well as efficient. So, for excellence both efficiency and effectiveness are required but if I am not working effectively then however efficient I may be I will not be able to get the desired goal or output. For example- As a manager if I am producing petrol based Cars when the demand in the market is of Diesel car then however efficiently I am making the petrol cars I will not get the desired output from the market.

So what I understand is that for a manager the most important thing is to set the right target or I can say the right direction for the organisation and then when the target is set effectively than I should focus on efficiency in the work as even if I am effective and setting the right targets I will not be able to get desired output until and unless I am not working efficiently. Similarly until and unless a manager is effective he/she will not be able to get the desired output however efficient the manager may be.

One more thing that I understood is that the excellence is in something which is applicable to masses rather than a particular group or indivisual.

The Examples of excellence are : Apple, Google, Internet etc and the common thing in all these is that they provide services to the masses and to every indivisual.
